Sir Nigel Gresley was one of the founders of the North Western Railway.
After Rudolph Diesel and William Meisner began a collaboration to construct a railway on the Island of Sodor, Meisner brought Gresley into the project as a third member. Despite the initial agreement in which Diesel would provide diesel locomotives, Gresley wanted to use steam engines. One night after Diesel left for the evening, Gresley was able to convince Meisner to dismiss Diesel from the project, allowing him to be the sole provider of engines to the project. Meisner agrees, and the two continue on with the railway without Diesel's involvement. Gresley's first contributions to the railway were the coffee pot engines.
