Modernization Marches On is the ninth episode of Sudrian Conflict.

Plot[]

After a final run, The Duke and Duchess announce to Spencer that he is being replaced by a diesel engine, and has been sold to the North Western Railway. Their new diesel arrives, and the two leave Spencer at the station to go look it over. Toby arrives next to Spencer, quickly gathering a sense of what was going on. He muses that technology marches on, noting that while Spencer is very advanced, he is merely an artifact, and is equally fearful of his future.

James also watches the goings on, quite disgusted that an oiler has taken another engine's job. Percy is shunting nearby, and asks James as to why he hates diesel engines so much. James tells Percy the story of Lady, the Duke and Duchess's private engine before Spencer. A series of storms then sweeps the island, leaving debris all over the tracks. Sir Topham Hatt borrows a diesel from an Irish Logging Railway to clean up the damage. He has a large claw which is suitable for picking up the branches. The diesel hated Lady, jealous of the attention she was receiving. One night, Lady was working in the quarry when Diesel 10 snuck up behind her. He grabbed from behind with his claw, and threw her into the sea below. Some workman witnessed this event and informed the Fat Controller, who sent the diesel away. After James' story, an impressionable Percy is left to stew over his new-found hatred of diesels.
